Jesse Saunders #4: Musicians Local #627
The Musicians Local No. 627 and the Mutual Musicians Foundation exhibit was produced and posted by the University 0f Missouri Kansas City and the Manual Musicians Foundation, through a grant from the William T. Kemper Foundation, in order to promote the history of the local African-American Musicians Union (#627), which has grown into the Mutual Musicians Foundation. The exhibit includes photographs, audio, video, and text, and is arranged in a very engaging, entertaining way, while also providing a lot of content for the user.
Collection Principles:
The primary audio/visual materials come from the collection of the Mutual Musicians Society, with a few resources coming from other library collections. The materials from the Mutual Musician were digitized by the University of Missouri for this project, however, it is not made clear whether these materials were already a part of their collection or acquired for this project, or whether or not this constitutes the totality of the Society's collection.
Object Characteristics:
The photographs included in the exhibit are displayed in small format on the general context of the sections, however by clicking on them the images are also viewable as larger jpeg files which can be downloaded. However, the audio files are posted in Real Audio format, and the "thematic" video sections are done with Flash, meaning it is much more difficult to download/capture these elements.
Metadata:
Metadata for this exhibit is greatly lacking. The photographs contain names of the people included in the photo. The audio tracks contain the song and artist name, as well as an image of the record label. The video portions contain no metadata. Outside of the common naming metadata, the only other metadata included is the repository holding materials that are not owned by the Mutual Musicians Society.
Intended Audience:
According to the main page "The Web exhibit is accessible to anyone around the world interested in the history of jazz in America." While their definition may be a bit far-reaching, this exhibit certainly appeals to people with an interest in jazz music, the Kansas City area, and possibly organized labor.
